Raven Girl - Royal Opera House

Circus consultancy

The National Centre provided circus consultantancy for the 2015 run of Raven Girl at the Royal Opera House.

Raven Girl was first created for the Royal Ballet by Wayne Macgregor and writer Audrey Niffenegger in 2013.

The publicity shots for the ballet featured a bewigged Sarah Lamb draped across an aerial hoop. We had always wondered who had helped them with the aerial elements of the show  It turns out no one had, which had created some challenges the first time around.

So, when it came to remounting the ballet for the 2015 season, Wayne and the Royal Ballet approached us to help them develop some of the aerial sequences and builds the dancers’ confidence on the hoop.

In the short film below, the Royal Ballet's Principal Dancer Sarah Lamb talks about working on the aerial hoop sections with our Circus Consultant Amy Panter.

Raven Girl played at the Royal Opera House from 6-24 October 2015.

About the show

Raven Girl is a modern fairytale from Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, in collaboration with award-winning writer Audrey Niffenegger and composer Gabriel Yared.

Judith Mackrell for the Guardian ★★★★☆

The extremes of Niffenegger's imagination inspire McGregor and his design team to create some spellbinding imagery. Deft cartoon scenery flips the action from a windswept cliff to a Kafkaesque city; ingenious props evoke the Raven Girl's yearning to release the bird inside her: a spinning circular trapeze; a pair of transfiguring, iridescent wings.
