Their diverse range of work includes professional development opportunities for aspiring and established performers, recreational classes for adults, and progressive training for under-18s. Their degree course is a 3-year BA (Hons) in Circus Arts. They enrol around 30 new students each year and our graduates have gone on to join companies such as Giffords, Cirque du Soleil, Ockham’s Razor, Cirque Eloize, Seven Fingers, Circa and GOM, or set up their own circus production companies such as Three Legged Race Productions, Barely Methodical Troupe, Brainfools and Revel Pucks.

The National Centre celebrates over 30 years of fostering the development of circus professionals across the UK.

The Graffiti Artist

My piece is an electrifying sequence of high impact, dynamic movement. A story told through the eyes of the graffiti artist. It begins with a sneaky entrance, live graffiti, hip-hop choreography and some clowning, finishing off with an energetic sequence of dynamic lyra tricks. It’s all about the thrill of the chase, and the escape from the law, creating meaningful art that cannot be stopped.

A Dancehall fever dream

JayJay Divine debuts Divine Hoops an electrifying new style fusing the Jamaican cultural dance style dancehall and Hoops together. The piece transports us through old school and new school tracks and dance moves from Thunder Clap to Stir Fry. It honours the Pioneers with a section dedicated to the ‘greatest dancer of all time’ Mr Wacky and the ‘Queen of Dancehall’ Spice.
Full of dancehall nostalgia from references to the unofficial kotch music video to Macka Diamonds Hoola Hoop this is a mosaic of dancehall moments, JayJay Divine has developed this style over the last nine months as part of a wider mission to reimagine traditional circus to centre parts of Black culture and disrupt a colonial legacy of exploiting, trafficking, and fetishising Black circus performers.
The piece celebrates the sanctity of collective cultural movement, honours the dancehall Queens that continue to inspire the reclamation of Black women’s pleasure and the audacious attitude of dancehall in a world obsessed with humbling Black women. A dancehall fever dream is an ode to JayJay Divine’s own journey working in Black queer nightlife for the past four years and how this is shaped her own understanding of embodiment community and freedom.
Take a deep breath and welcome to JayJay Divine’s world.

We’ve always been passionate about ensuring our students have high-quality opportunities to perform their work and donations have helped us continue to produce these shows. But, as with many producing theatres in recent times, the cost of delivery has rapidly increased, and it now costs us roughly £100,000 every year to put on our student productions.

Please consider making a donation today and help support this hugely important part of the learning journey.
