All Womxn/ Non-binary Aerial Straps Symposium

Join us at National Centre for Circus Arts for an all womxn/non binary aerial straps symposium.

The goals of the symposium are:

  • To discuss and raise points regarding gender and straps and how this can affect training, working and our experience within circus.
  • To generate ideas about changes we would like to see and how we could make them happen. These could be with regards to many topics relevant to gender and straps such as changes in spotting methods, definitions of “straps technique”, avoiding gender based language in trick naming, inclusion of menstrual cycle information and training, workplace etiquette, the historical links to “only male” gymnastics rings etc. I will be writing a short report following the convention to write up what we discuss so we can all have access to it and hopefully share with other coaches and schools (providing consent from the group)
  • Actual straps training! We will likely split the room into different groups and divide up to be able to share knowledge and train together. This will probably involve a spinning section, a swinging section, a freestyle section and a static / support section.
  • To provide space and time for us all to meet!! Circus community is SO IMPORTANT. This is a very rare opportunity for lots of us to get together at once and benefit from all being in one room. There will be people who are at lots of different stages of their circus journeys and careers so this is a really good chance to be able to meet and support each other.
